Revelation 2:8
The context
The letters to seven churches begin with Ephesus and continue to Smyrna, a city where the community faced pressure and slander. This is one of the two letters with no rebuke, and its Christians are described as poor yet rich. The title given to the speaker echoes the vision of chapter one.
What it establishes
It establishes that the exalted Christ addresses a suffering congregation under the title of the first and the last, and that the ground of the address is his own death and life.
What it does not establish
It does not describe the persecution in detail. The letter names affliction, poverty, and slander without identifying the accusers beyond a polemical phrase, and it gives no dates. Nor does it promise that the faithful will escape suffering; the promise is a crown of life through it.
