Romans 5:19
The context
Paul is drawing the Adam and Christ comparison that fills Romans 5. He has spoken of the trespass that entered the world and of the free gift that came after it. Verse 19 restates the parallel in terms of obedience rather than of trespass and gift.
What it establishes
It establishes that the letter treats Adam as a real counterpart to Christ, and that the mechanism named on both sides is a representative act. The many are constituted in a state by what one did, in both directions.
What it does not establish
It does not explain how the representation works. Whether the connection is biological, federal, or something else is not stated. Paul asserts the parallel and leaves the metaphysics alone, and interpreters have filled the gap with theories the verse does not contain.
