Romans 8:1

The context

Chapter 8 opens the argument's resolution after the struggle of chapter 7. The sentence is a verdict: there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Some manuscripts add a clause about walking according to the Spirit, and the difference affects how the verse is read.

What it establishes

It establishes that the verdict of condemnation has been lifted for those united with Christ, and that the ground is what God has done rather than what the person has achieved. The word order matters: the declaration comes before the life described in the rest of the chapter.

What it does not establish

It does not establish that conduct is irrelevant. The chapter goes on to insist on life in the Spirit and warns about the deeds of the body. Nor does the verse say who is in Christ; the criterion is asserted, not applied.
