Romans 8:38-39

The context

This is the climax of chapter 8, after the groaning of creation and the Spirit's intercession. Paul has asked who can bring a charge against God's elect, and answered with the giving of the Son. Verses 38-39 list the powers that cannot separate, ending with height, depth, and anything else in creation.

What it establishes

It establishes that the love of God in Christ is presented as secure against every competing power, including death and the present order. The list is deliberately exhaustive in form, and the conclusion moves from persuasion to the love itself as the anchor.

What it does not establish

It does not establish that nothing can separate a person who never believes. The subject is those who love God and are called, and apostasy is not discussed. Nor does the verse explain how the security works.
