Zechariah 6:12

The context

Zechariah 6 concludes a series of night visions and then narrates a symbolic act: silver and gold are taken and a crown is made for Joshua the high priest. Verse 12 is spoken over him, and it introduces a figure called the Branch who will build the temple and sit on a throne. The passage mixes priestly and royal imagery without resolving it.

What it establishes

It establishes that a figure bearing the title Branch is associated here with temple building and with the union of throne and priesthood. The act is symbolic, performed on someone who is not the figure described.

What it does not establish

It does not settle who the Branch is. The crown is placed on Joshua, and interpreters have identified the Branch as Joshua, as Zerubbabel, or as a future figure. The passage's grammar and imagery have been read both ways, and the text does not pick one.
