The context

John 21 is an epilogue added after the book's first ending. It narrates a fishing trip, a breakfast on the shore, the restoration of Peter, and a word about the beloved disciple's future. Verse 25 is the final sentence, and it follows a note that the writer's testimony is true.

What it establishes

It establishes that the author knew his account was selective. The image is deliberately exaggerated, but the point is plain: what has been written is a selection from a larger body of material, not a complete record.

What it does not establish

It does not say how much is missing. The sentence is rhetorical hyperbole, and it gives no estimate of the omitted material, no indication of its content, and no claim that it was ever written down. Arguments from silence about what the Gospels do not mention run into this verse.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
