The context

Jesus has been arrested in Gethsemane and taken to Caiaphas, where the trial is underway. Peter has followed at a distance and sits in the courtyard with the servants. The three denials are interleaved with the trial scene, and the cock crow and the remembered prediction close the unit before the morning.

What it establishes

The passage records the failure of the leading disciple, exactly as predicted, and it does so without softening the details: he denies with an oath and then breaks down. It shows that the confession at Caesarea Philippi did not make him immune to collapse.

What it does not establish

It does not make the denial unforgivable. Matthew's Gospel ends with the disciples restored in Galilee, and John records a threefold reinstatement that answers the threefold denial. Nor does the passage explain Peter's motives; it reports words and tears, leaving the psychology to the reader.
